A Case of the Sleepiezzzzzz

I know you are all waiting for some fabulous new blog post, but all I can think about is how sleepy I am!

I'm supposed to be reading up on the regulations at The New Job but I just can't concentrate. Hell, I can barely keep my eyes open.

This has been an ongoing issue for me - afternoon sleepiness. Sometimes it's not that bad, but sometimes (like today) it really kicks my butt.

And then there's the issue of sitting still.

I'm sure it's related to years of working jobs where sitting for any length of time was virtually unheard of. If I have to sit for an extended period of time, the sleepies start to come on.

It doesn't even take that long.

After thirty minutes, I'm mentally checking out, and by 45 minutes I'm lucky if my eyes are still open.

It has nothing to do with what I'm doing, either. I can be actively engaged in something, I can be totally immersed in what I'm doing, it can even be something I find very interesting.

Doesn't matter.

I feel like I should start meetings with "You've got forty minutes... Go!"

I have been actively engaged in discussions at a meeting and found myself doing the eye-crossing dozy thing.

What's wrong with me?

It seems like the only time I don't have this problem is when I just plain sleep through this part of the day.

It occurred to me recently that it seems like my body's clock runs best when I get about 5 hours of sleep at night and about 3 during the early afternoon.

Which is great and all, except that, um, I have a JOB. With NORMAL working hours. I also have kids that make working an extreme alternate work schedule next to impossible.

Even if I could talk my boss into letting me work 5am to 1:30pm so I could be home by naptime.

I've tried drinking a soda, having a snack (protein, fruit, fat and sugar packed carbs), drinking water, having a walk.

Nothing!

What are your tips and tricks for getting over the afternoon sleepies?

Any ideas for readjusting a seriously jacked up body clock?

Care to share any stories of your own maladjusted internal clocks?

With me being on the road, my once consistent internal clock is rather out of whack at times. I have found a few things help:

- minimize how much I eat just before bed (give about 2 hours to digest last meal and have NOTHING after that other than water)
- avoid big lunches (salads or other lighter fare work well)
- go to bed at the same time
- exercise when I get up
- routine, routine, routine (do it even on Sat/Sun)

If it persists you should investigate sleep issues like sleep apnea. You may not realize you're not getting a full 6-8 hours.
