School's New Uniforms: Orange Jumpsuits

I went into the breakroom to make my morning snack and what did I find? Platter upon platter of snack items. But not the donuts and bagels that are usually brought in. These are things that could have come straight from my snack-time wish list: fresh fruits & veggies, nuts, chunks of cheese, olives, including garlic stuffed olives!

In news that's actually news, teachers in the Monkey's school district may be starting a labor action this week called "working to the bell". This means that they'll be doing only what they are contractually required to do, and none of those extras. Like going to PTA meetings. Wait, what? There are teachers who actually go to PTA meetings?

Good to know.

I feel kind of bad, though, because I can see both sides of the argument.

The state budget is in such a large deficit that they are seriously considering cutting the funding that goes to schools instead of doing what the law says and increasing it (Hi Proposition 98! I guess you were good to us while you lasted!). So you have an already poor district being faced with less money coming in pitted against teachers who are also feeling the pinch and would like to have a little more in their paycheck to help balance that out.

On the one hand, now is really not the time for the district to be looking at increasing expenditures. Our district, in particular, is faced with having to make some hard choices, and there will most likely be layoffs. In fact, there are, right now, 89 positions on the chopping block.

At the same time, you aren't doing anyone any favors by short changing the driving force behind education - the educators! Teachers aren't in it for the money. That would be stupid. But they've got families to care for, the same as anyone else. Costs are going up for them, too. The same as everyone else.

How do you balance that?

When Proposition 98 was being pushed, back in 1988, I was in school (junior high, to be exact). I remember the commercials showing shots of classrooms with leaking ceilings and the general disrepair and, you know what? I went to schools that had the issues shown in those commercials. While I'm not going to go so far as to say that we had things so bad back in the day, it was a shame that education had such a low priority in the budget.

Education is still a low priority in any budget battle and the fact that it's 20 years after Proposition 98 and schools are still having to fight for money should be an embarassment to California legislators.

Meanwhile, kids are getting dumber and fatter and more hopped up on perscription medications to control "bad behaviors" and you can't tell me that it's not clear there's a correlation.

Give the schools their damn money, already.

Our kids shouldn't have to wait until they're in prison to get a decent education.

PS: my breath smells fabulous, by the way. Thanks for asking.

You should send your blog (minus the breath and snack commentary) to state legislators. They're really effing up.

How ironic...I spent my entire day trying to rally the troops for tonight's BOE meeting.

The cranky seniors in town have cut the budget so much that the BOE is probably going to cut kindergarten aides, before school elementary sports and the elementary strings program to name a few.

The possibility of having the strings program cut is really getting the parents mad and involved. Hopefully the involvement will spill into other areas of the school.

Why are schools always last on the priority list? We are out of paper while the town keeps buying new vehicles.

FYI~I have been elected co-grand po bah of the PTO next year. Any thoughts about moving to CT? We could rule the PTO together. ;)

DUDE...

Yeah...

Ummm... No... Not anytime soon are we relocating... But who knows... According to the numerology report... There is some talk of relocation...

One thing though Gruppie... How's your state on the "PINK" (GLBT) issue... It may just worth that extra little peak...

~*~**~*~**~*~

Elphie... I have said that statement ver batem to her just about EVERY other blog... Or so... It's a true statement nevertheless... A sad... Yet a true one to boot... But obviously a perpetual one at that...

Why is it the little people... The middle of the rope is cut... In order to allow for the two ends to meet... That's awful... Like cutting one's nose off to spite their face... And what has that ever gotten anyone... A senseless act that just makes the majority of the populace sick... Rage filled... Same thing... BAH...

What it boils down to is that our so called "future" is still suffering from WAY the fuck back when... We were ALL supposed to be our own "FUTURES"... Then we grew up... Who somehow managed to get raked in with the mainstream... And forgotten...

Honestly... That term should never have been coined... Simply because it was a shallow pipe dream... One that made us as children... Believe that "WE" were the answer to all of the chaos our parents... And society knew...

**AHEM**...

Sorry about that folks... I'll shut up now...

elphie - ok, but can I include the breath comments if I send them some garlic stuffed olives with the letter?

gruppie - what is wrong with people and cutting school funding? But did you see elphie's comment a few posts back about the e-waste recycling? Try looking into that, because it sounds like a great fundraiser!

SweetPea - I love it when you get all fired up! You wanna deliver my letter and the olives to the legislature?

Alright - breath comments are acceptable with garlic and olives... but NO onions!!

And seriously, e-waste drive! We raised over $2000 bucks in one Saturday.

Thanks for the info on e-waste. Apparently it is only a CA thing. What a great fundraiser! We seem to be a little behind the times when it comes to recycling out here.

As for the pink climate, that is a good question. New Englanders in general (not so much NH) historically have been a liberal bunch. Even the republicans I know are only financial republicans...socially they are liberal.

At Girlie's school we have a few same-sex parents and no one seems to even notice. Many churches in the area fly rainbow flags.

I found this info on Wikipeda "Connecticut enacted a civil union law in 2005 that provides same-sex couples with all of the same rights and responsibilities as marriage. However just like same-sex marriages in Massachusetts, the state cannot provide the same federal benefits of marriage due to the federal Defense of Marriage Act. Connecticut became the second state in the United States (following Vermont) to adopt civil unions, and the first to do so without judicial intervention."

Vermont and Massachusetts are known as being very GLBT friendly. There are even a few towns that a predominately GLBT; Provincetown, MA and North Hampton, MA come to mind.

I tend to be a little spacey sometimes and don't tend to notice what's going on around me. I will ask around a little for you.

Not that I'm avoiding it people... I just have to be able to sit down with MORE time... Because... As you know... Especially when I get "fired-up"... I'm no terse chicken...
